An admirable harnessed Elephant Walkingstick. England, circa 1890

The substantial elephant ivory is 11 cm high x 5 cm to the side x 3,5 cm wide. It is carved as an elephant head with large ears, tiny eyes and a trunk curved inwards flanked by two mighty tusks.  The detail of the skin-corrugation on this pachyderm is astonishing. This small but nevertheless monumental composition is accented by a parade harness and long foliage in the background. There is a plain turned ivory collar and it is on top of a sound ebony shaft and finishing with a staghorn tip. The O.L. of the cane is 91 cm. There is a little chip in the ivory collar hardly noticeable (see picture), without any chips or cracks on the handle the condition is perfect!

We deliver this piece with a signed document issued by a certified appraiser, corroborating the ivory is older than 100 years and therefore before 1947.

An elephant represents commitment, strength, and power. The elephant attains old age and with it, wisdom and… long memory. The Elephant is considered a strong symbol of luck in Thailand. The Hindu god of wisdom and success, Ganesh, is usually depicted with an elephant's head. The elephant has been a symbol of the Republican Party of the United States ever since 1874.  * Book of symbols.
