Ivory Bear Walking Cane. Russia, circa 1900

This lovely elephant ivory handle crook-shaped with a longer vertical stem is 12 cm high x 21 cm to the side x 3 cm wide. It is embellished with an applied bear cub, turned belt and buckle ivory collar, the furry animal is rendered in high relief with a lovable expression on the face and raised front paws exposing its round and short-tailed body, and looks like as if it was making its morning, stretch gymnastics. It is on top of a snakewood shaft and ending with a stag-horn tip. The O.L. is 94 cm. Covered with a uniform honing patina on a smooth surface, without chips or cracks only a few hairlines the condition is perfect. Brimming with seductive powers, this cane is a wearable piece of art and oozes Russian parentage.

The motif of the bear came into fashion in Western Europe with the emerging Russian taste in the middle of the 19th century. In northern countries, it replaces the lion as the king of the beasts and represents power and warfare. Because it hibernates and then wakes in the spring, the bear also symbolizes resurrection. Unfortunately, global warming threatens the existence of this mighty species.

Evidence suggests that since Paleolithic times, human beings have made the bear an object of magic-religious veneration. Clever, curious, dexterous, the bear is so like a human in appearance and character. Some stories tell of marriages and crossings-over between bears and human. * Book of symbols.

We deliver this piece with a signed document issued by a certified appraiser, corroborating the ivory is older than 100 years and therefore before 1947.
