Two Bears Cane, Russia ca. 1900

The silver crook handle is 11 cm high x 13 cm to the side x 2,5 cm thick, it represents a forest scene where two bears collaborate to reach two hanging chestnuts, one of the bears has climbed on the shoulders of his companion and clutching the trunk of the tree is already a few centimeters from the nuts, the scene is adorable and recreating the essence of a fable which is a message through a happening among animals. Silver-work is very well modelled, cast and finely hand chased, the detail is astonishing! Stamped with illegible marks on silver this cane comes from a collection of Russian objects among them other canes, this piece shows in motive and details the evidence of Russian parentage. Since the mid-19th century, the bear became the symbolic animal of the Russian empire.

It is on top of a sound laurel wood shaft with a bimetal ferrule. The O.L. is 94 cm, and without chips or cracks our dents, only minimal signs of usage, the condition is perfect !

Evidence suggests that since Paleolithic times, human beings have made the bear an object of magic-religious veneration. Clever, curious, dexterous, the bear is so like a human in appearance and character. Some stories tell of marriages and crossings-over between bears and human. * Book of symbols.

Unfortunately, global warming threatens the existence of this mighty species.
